When moving home, it is important to let the energy suppliers in the old and new property what's going on and provide key information. Otherwise, you may end up being overcharged by either or both of the suppliers. Luckily, the actions needed are quick and simple.
This article covers:
- A quick summary of what do I need to do
- What do I do before I move out?
- What do I do after I move out?
- What will my old supplier do?
- What happens if I don't take these actions?
- What will Switchd do next?
If we already look after switching on your current property, don't forget to use the Switchd dashboard Moving home function, found on the left-hand side of your dashboard.
What do I need to do?
- At the old property, submit meter readings to your old supplier on your last day (doing this through your Switchd Dashboard is the easiest way to do this)
- At the new property, register with the existing supplier, on the standard variable deal (the old occupant will have left information about this) IMPORTANT: Don’t sign up to a new fixed deal with that supplier at this point!
- Submit meter readings at the new property to your new supplier as soon as possible once you’ve moved in
What do I do before I move out?
Step 1: Provide the old supplier with some information
Your supplier at the old property will get in touch to confirm your last day at your property and the new address, so they can send you the final bill (it will also be sent by email).
Step 2: Submit meter readings on your last day
Submit meter readings on your last day using your Switchd dashboard. It's also a good idea to take a photo of your meter readings, just in case.
What do I do after I move in?
Step 3: Submit meter readings on your first day
Take note of your meter readings at the new property. It's also a good idea to take a photo of your meter readings
Step 4: Register with the existing supplier
You will need to call up and register with the existing supplier, as well as providing them with your meter readings. Ask to remain on their Standard variable tariff. We will do the deal finding for you!
What will my old supplier do?
When you use the moving home button on your Switchd dashboard, we make things a little bit easier by sending an email to your old supplier, so you don't have too. We let them know that you are leaving the property on the date you told us and request that they begin closing down your account. The supplier is responsible for processing this and so will get in touch with you directly to ensure they have all the information they need to do so.
Using the final meter readings you provide on your last ay at the property to calculate your final balance, the supplier will either arrange for any credit to be refunded to you or request any final sums that are outstanding. Just so you know, this process can take up to 6 weeks after you have left.
What happens if I don't take these actions?
If you don’t provide your previous or new supplier with your meter readings, they will have no choice but to use estimates to calculate your bill. This could mean you are overcharged.
If you do not register with your new supplier, when we try to switch your property away to a new deal, they can block that switch and keep you on a more expensive deal! If you do not provide your new supplier with meter readings they could charge you for energy you didn't use.
What will Switchd do?
Once you have moved in, we will resume scanning the market daily and initiate a switch automatically, when a deal that will save you money becomes available.
If you have any questions about your final bill, just get in touch with your old supplier directly!
