Currently, smart meters aren’t normally compatible between suppliers. It’s most likely that if you switch, you’ll need to give manual meter readings until this changes in the future. It’s therefore important to take the reading from your actual meter, not the small in-home display screen, as the screen may not work after a switch.

Smart meters show their numbers digitally through the in-home display screen. Different display screens (from different suppliers) will need to be operated in different ways to show meter readings.
